What do Interior Designers do? PDF  | Print |

Most people admire the work of Interior Designers without appreciating what interior design actually involves. Many assumes the focus of this profession is always on aesthetics.

Interior design is a discipline that demands research, concept development and analytical skills, a command of technology and knowledge of building codes.

For the purposes of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity and protecting the life, health, safety, and welfare of the public, the professional Interior Designer must:

  • Analyze the client's needs, goals, life, and safety requirements,
  • Integrate findings with knowledge of interior design,
  • Formulate preliminary design concepts that are functional, aesthetically pleasing and financially appropriate,
  • Develop and present final design recommendations through appropriate presentation media,
  • Provide management activities, including project budgeting and scheduling,
  • Prepare working drawings and specifications for interior construction, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures, and other equipment,
  • Collaborate with other practitioners who offer professional services in the technical areas of mechanical, electrical, and structural design as required for regulatory approval (building permits),
  • Prepare and administer bids and contract documents as the client's agenda, and
  • Review and evaluate construction during implementation and upon completion.
